Laptop Insurance can protect your laptop, but so can these handy battery saving tips.

So I think we’ve all made that mad dash for the charger when we see the low battery warning. Sometimes you feel like you could compete in the Olympics if someone were to drag an adapter chord in front of you. What many people don’t know is that batteries could last much longer. However the laptop performs so many unnecessary tasks that the juice gets used up far too quickly.

If you’re on your way to college/work and find that your dwindling around the 20% mark all too often, all isn’t lost! Here are some handy tips to make sure you get all your work done by extending your battery life.

1. The Obvious

Okay so lets get what we usually hear when we’re in a panic about our dying laptop.

  • Dim the screen
  • Switch to “Battery saver” in the power options
  • Switch into airplane mode unless internet is necessary

2. Turn off all unnecessary start up programs


  • Hit Ctrl – Alt – Delete to open task manager
  • In the top tab look for “start up”
  • Look through the list of software. Locate the ones you do not need as soon as you start up your laptop (iTunes for example)
  • Right click on unnecessary programs and hit “Disable”
  • When  you are done, restart your computer.

3.   Remove the battery and clean the metal contacts.

Wipe them with alcohol (research into what is battery friendly before you apply). ideally do this every two months, to ensure that the power transfer between the laptop and its battery is as efficient as possible. Allow the battery to dry thoroughly before replacing it!

4. Do not keep your laptop constantly on charge 

Lithium-ion batteries can’t be overcharged It’s not healthy for the battery to be constantly running. Better yet. Remove it whenever possible that you can plug your laptop into the wall. This gives the battery a rest and you have a slightly lighter laptop.

Hint. You can extend your batteries lifespan by not charging the laptop to 100% every time. Sometimes 90% works just as well.

5. Defragment your hard drive.

Ideally every two months so your system operates as efficiently as possible. By de-fragmenting your laptop can search through your hard drive much faster ensuring that battery life is not wasted on menial tasks.
